Most normal learners are able to gather information through either the
visual (eyes) or auditory (ears) channel. However, many students with Learning
Disabilities have deficits in one or the other of these two areas and rely almost entirely
on the remaining, intact modality.
Imagine the frustration of a Learning Disabled student who learns exclusively via the
visual channel when he is placed with a teacher who delivers countless lectures and offers
no visual reinforcement.
The auditory learner must hear information in order to comprehend and utilize it.
Information, when presented visually, is not understood by the student. However, when the
same information is presented verbally (auditory channel) the student is able to
understand it.

Do you recognize this famous passage? Probably not. Now read the passage aloud.
Suddenly it will become quite clear to you. This illustrates the need to teach students
according to their favored modality.
