ECONOMICS 120 and ECONOMICS 121

ONLINE STUDENT ORIENTATION

Printable version of this page (PDF)

Introduction

This Online Orientation along with your course syllabus will introduce you to course content and expectations. You'll also get everything set up and ready for class. Your first assignment will include questions about this orientation, the syllabus, and your textbook. As you read this orientation, jot down any questions you have and post them to our online classroom CourseCompassTM discussion forum. (I'll be giving points for messages posted to CourseCompass discussion.)

Your first assignment is due during the third week of class so that I can make sure you are ready to go and have some basic prerequisite skills.

Plan to spend up to eight hours per week on learning activities in the course. Schedule more time if you have little experience with computers or online classes.  You will find it easiest if you schedule at least two work sessions a week and keep up you’re your assignments. This is especially important near the end of the term when you may experience additional stress.

General Course Information

Economics 120 and Economics 121 are entirely online. There will be no on-campus meetings.

Course syllabi are available online at Economics Department website: http://www.cuyamaca.edu/Economics/

You will be reading two to three chapters of the text each week. At times you will be reading outside assignments on the Internet. There is a discussion board where you discuss the content of the reading assignments. There will be weekly assignments: quizzes on the text material (open book), writing assignments based on the textbook and websites, and discussion board assignments. All assigned work is asynchronous. You will not have any set time to logon to the course; however in order to be successful you must logon to the course often to participate in class work and there are weekly deadlines for assignments.

Online courses can be more difficult than “face to face” classes because an online course requires you to become an active learner. In many face to face classes students can “disengage” at times, sit in class “passively” and allow the instructor to do the work.  In an online class you are responsible for reading everything the instructor and classmates post in the online classroom and showing that you understand the assignments by posting to the discussion boards and dialoging with your instructor and fellow classmates. You are expected to logon to the online classroom often to post to the discussion boards and to read the posts as well. I plan to only communicate with you through the online classroom.

This course is not for you if you don’t have the time to logon to the course often to read the announcements, emails, and discussion board posts as well as to do the reading and homework on a weekly basis.

Enrolling in both online economics courses is not recommended unless you have above average reading and writing skills.

Is online for you?

The Cuyamaca College website has information that might help you in deciding whether you wish to take an online course.

Which version of CourseCompass should you buy?

You will be given two options if you didn't get an access code to CourseCompass when you purchased your textbook. Those of you who purchased a new textbook at the Cuyamaca College Bookstore can ignore this message because you got the access code at no extra charge.

The two options that you are offered are:

MyEconLab, powered by CourseCompass, for Macroeconomics/Microeconomics by Leeds, Von Allmen, and Schiming $70.00
(This option you received at no extra charge if you purchased a new book from the Cuyamaca College bookstore.)

 • MyEconLab in CourseCompass for Macroeconomics/Microeconomics by Leeds/von Allmen/Schiming $40.00

In addition to giving you access to CourseCompass online classroom and MyEconLab, the first option gives you access to Key Points to Remember, Multimedia Library, eThemes of the Times, Self-Study Quiz, Test + Extend Links (in selected chapters), an eText (the entire textbook online), and an eStudy Guide.

The second option will only give you access to CourseCompass online classroom and MyEconLab.

Selecting either option will enable you to complete all of your online course assignments. I recommend that you purchase the first option because it provides more resources to help you do well in the class.
