  • Dorland's Medical Dictionary (Merck) Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary allows you to look up definitions for complex medical terms. Use this resource just as you would a printed dictionary.

  • Merriam-Webster Online Thesaurus Search for terms.

  • Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names The programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust focus on the visual arts in all of their dimensions, serving both general audiences and specialized professionals.  The Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN) and the other Getty vocabularies are made available via the Web browsers to support limited research and cataloging efforts.

Online Encyclopedias

  • The Columbia Encyclopedia: Sixth Edition - This is an online version of the 2000 edition of the Columbia Encyclopedia, a one volume, short-entry encyclopedia with over 50,000 entries.

  • Encarta (Concise) Encyclopedia - Microsoft's free version of encyclopedia which contains 16,000 articles and more than 2,200 photos, illustrations, maps, charts, and tables.

  • Encyclopedia Britannica  one of the world's most trusted sources of information on every topic imaginable - from the origins of the universe to current events and everything in between.

  • Encyberpedia - An annotated listing of subject-oriented encyclopedias available on the Web.

  • Encyclopedia.com - Encyclopedia.com, the Internet's premiere free encyclopedia, provides users with more than 57,000 frequently updated articles from the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. Each article is enhanced with links to newspaper and magazine articles as well as pictures and maps - all provided by HighBeam Research.

  • Encyclopedia Smithsonian - Provides answers to frequently asked questions at the famous museum.  Includes information on the armed forces history, anthropology, mineral sciences, musical history, physical sciences, services, textiles conservation, transportation history, and vertebrate zoology.

  • Columbia Encyclopedia at Bartleby.com.  This encyclopedia contains nearly 51,000 entries (marshalling six and one-half million words on a vast range of topics), and with more than 80,000 hypertext cross-references, the current Sixth Edition is among the most complete and up-to-date encyclopedias ever produced

  • Nolo's Legal Encyclopedia - This site has legal information in non-legal language covering wills & estate planning, retirement & elder care, small business, employment, independent contractors, Internet law, trademarks & copyright, patent & trade secrets, landlords & tenants, real estate, consumer & travel, and more.  Additionally, there are annotated lists of recommended Internet resources related to each subject.

  • ERIC - The Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education, produces the world’s premier database of journal and non-journal education literature. The ERIC online system provides the public with a centralized ERIC Web site for searching the ERIC bibliographic database of more than 1.1 million citations going back to 1966. More than 107,000 full-text non-journal documents (issued 1993-2004), previously available through fee-based services only, are now available for free. ERIC is moving forward with its modernization program, and has begun adding materials to the database.

  • Wikipedia the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. In this English version, started in 2001, we are currently working on 853,291 articles.
