CA BAR-Approved Emission Training Program

Fall 2009 SCHEDULE

Smog Check Program -
2009 Update Training Course (16 hour)

The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) requires all licensed Smog Check technicians WHOSE LICENSE EXPIRES AFTER JANUARY 1, 2009 to complete the “2009 Update Training Course” prior to renewing their license.

You will receive your course materials the first night of class!

These courses meet for 4 evenings - 4 hours each night. The   course will cover the following subject areas:

  • HC, CO, NOx diagnostic strategies
  • Electronic Throttle Control
  • Accessing automotive related information via the internet (homework assignment)
  • CAN Data Bus Communication Networks

To pass the course, students will be required to:

  • Complete all home work assignments, including accessing the internet to complete a take home quiz
  • Successfully complete all laboratory assignments
  • Attend all scheduled course hours
  • Pass a two-part 50 question final exam ( 15 questions are in take home test, 35 questions are in class test; minimum score is 70% on each test)

Fee: $295

The good news: Successful completion of this 16 hour course (including completing all required lab assignments and passing the written final exam) continues to take the place of the previously required state smog exam (only for those who are renewing a current license). As soon as you finish this course, send your renewal application to the BAR and you are done (assuming your ASE or alternative certificates are not expired).

You must bring a picture ID and Smog License # (if you have a license) to class.
