Game Recap 2011-12 Season

2/15/12 Palomar College -- The Coyotes headed to Palomar for their last road game of the season.  In the first half, Palomar shot the ball quick making 7 three point shots and shooting 50% from the floor.  The Coyotes matched Palomar by shooting 53% from the floor behind the balanced attack of Anthony Bowden (15 pts), Jake Haar (12 pts & 7 rebs) & Chioke Walker (11 pts & 4 assists) taking a 44-42 point lead into halftime.  In the second half, the Coyotes went cold from the floor (39% FG, 25% from 3) while Palomar shot an amazing 72% from the floor and 66% from the three point arc.  Coyotes lose 70-87.
2/10/12 Cuyamaca College -- The Coyotes were set to play Miramar for the third time after beating them in the IVC Tournament by one and losing by 19 to them in January.  The Coyotes played very good defense in the first half limiting Miramar to 26 points.  Unfortunately the Coyotes could only score 17 by intermission by shooting too many perimeter shots and not looking in the post.  In the second half, the Coyotes employed both their zone and man defenses to keep Miramar guessing.  Unlike the first half, the Coyotes had a balanced offense attack with four players in double figures - Chioke Walker (14 pts), Anthony Bowden (11 pts), Jake Haar (10 pts) & Armon Worrell (10 pts).  With the score tied at 45, Armon Worrell & Anthony Bowden made back to back three point shots.  The Coyotes held on to secure a 57-52 victory.
2/8/12 Grossmont College -- The Coyotes looked to follow up their February win over SD Mesa after taking the month of January off (0-8).  The game against Grossmont could not have started off worst for the Coyotes who trailed 2-10 and then 4-16.  After switching to their zone defense, the Coyotes were able to cut the deficit to 3 points at half.  In the second half, the game was close with the Coyotes trailing by 6 points with eight minutes to play and then taking a two point lead with two minutes left.  Unfortunately for the Coyotes, Grossmont hit an open 3 point shot and made two free throws on a controversial blocking call.  With the Coyotes trailing by 3 points with 8 seconds left, the Coyotes could not make the big tying shot like in their previous game against SD Mesa.  Coyotes lose 61-64.  They were led by Keko Moore (15 pts & 6 rebs).
2/3/12 Cuyamaca College -- The Coyotes faced SD Mesa who had defeated the Coyotes by two points in their first match-up.  Tonight the Coyotes led by two points at half time but allowed Mesa to make open 3 point shots against both their man and zone defenses.  With 3 minutes to play, the Coyotes trailed by 10 points.  The Coyotes press began to create turnovers allowing Jake Haar (11 pts), Keko Moore (13 pts) & Anthony Bowden (10 pts) to score.  With the Coyotes trailing by 3 points with 1.8 seconds, Chioke Walker (30 pts) made a clutch three point shot at the buzzer to force overtime.  In overtime, the Coyotes controlled the tempo with their offense and disrupted Mesa with their switching defense.  Coyotes win 84-79 in OT.
1/27/12 Cuyamaca College -- The Coyotes hosted first place San Diego City College.  The Coyotes started out slow and trailed 24-41 at half.  In the second half, the Coyotes tightened up their defense and started to control the tempo behind a balanced attack led by Jake Haar (19 pts & 10 rebs), Terrence Cole (6 assists & 5 rebs), Armon Worrell (7 pts & 7 rebs), Yuel Hagos (9 pts) & Keko Moore (8 rebs & 4 assists).  When Chioke Walker (13 pts, 3 threes) hit a 3 point shot with 6 minutes to play, the Coyotes tied the score at 55.  Unfortunately, the Coyotes shot 2/10 from the free throw line in the second half and missed numerous layups down the stretch.  However, the Coyotes had one last chance to tie the score with 4 seconds remaining.  Jake Haar's fade away jumper at the buzzer rolled in and out.  Coyotes lose 64-66.
1/25/12 Cuyamaca College -- The Coyotes hosted Mira Costa on Cuyamaca College's first spirit night.  Students who attended the game received a free BBQ dinner before the game.  The Coyotes hoped that they could beat Mira Costa for a second time.  After trailing 30-33 at half, the Coyotes kept the game close despite turning the ball over 27 times.  Behind Anthony Bowden (8 pts & 20 rebs) the Coyotes dominated the boards 43-28.  With 4 minutes to play the Coyotes trailed 60-61.  The Coyotes had numerous chances to take the lead but could not make a bucket.  While Mira Costa stretched their lead in the last four minutes, the Coyotes squandered their chance for victory by turning the ball over four of their final eight possessions and missing two layups.  Coyotes lose 62-70.  The Coyotes were led by Keko Moore (16 pts), Jake Haar (12 pts), Yuel Hagos (8 pts), Chioke Walker (8 pts & 6 assists) & Armon Worrell (4 assists).
1/20/12 Imperial Valley College -- The Coyotes headed to play IVC for the third time this season.  After losing to the PCAC leading Arabs in close games, the Coyotes were hoping to pull off a huge upset.  Unfortunately, it did not work out for the Coyotes.  The Coyotes suffered their worst defeat of the season 35-79.  They shot 26% from the floor, 18% from the 3pt arc, were outrebounded by 19 and committed 20 turnovers while IVC shot 50% from both the floor and 3pt arc.
1/18/12 Southwestern College -- The Coyotes visited Southwestern in their last game before the second half of PCAC play.  The Coyotes trailed by 3 at half behind the balanced attack of Keko Moore (14 pts), Dalawn Moss (11 pts), Chioke Walker (11 pts & 6 assists), Jake Haar (9 pts & 11 rebs) & Anthony Bowden (8 pts & 6 rebs).  In the second half, the Coyotes turned the ball over (19 for the game) and allowed Southwestern to score 10 points on these turnovers.  The Coyotes cut the lead to 5 points with 5 minutes but could not make key baskets and free throws down the stretch.  Coyotes lose 62-73.
1/13/12 Cuyamaca College -- The Coyotes hosted Palomar and started the game off playing great defense.  After 30 minutes of play the Coyotes led 46-31.  The Coyotes were energized by Chioke Walker (18 pts & 7 rebs) & Anthony Bowden (9 pts).  Unfortunately for the Coyotes, college basketball games are 40 minutes long.  The Coyotes were outscored 32-13 in the last 10 minutes.  The Coyotes had a chance to take the lead with 30 seconds to play but Jake Haar's (12 pts) pass ahead to Keko Moore (11pts) was stold after a Palomar player clamped Keko's arm.  Tough break for the Coyotes as they lose 59-63.
1/11/12 Miramar College -- The Coyotes lost at Miramar 66-85.  The Coyotes trailed by 7 at half and cut the lead to three to begin the second half.  Unfortunately for the Coyotes, Miramar continued to score with their fast break offense.  The Coyotes missed open shots while Miramar shot the ball well outscoring the Coyotes 24 to 6 from the three-point arc.  The Coyotes were led by Keko Moore (16 pts), Terrence Cole (11 pts), Dalawn Moss (6 assists), Chioke Walker (10 pts) & Anthony Bowden (10 rebs).
1/6/12 Cuyamaca College -- The Coyotes lost to Grossmont 56-63.  The Coyotes took a two point lead into halftime behind Dalawn Moss (14 pts & 4 assists) and Chioke Walker (9 pts).  In the second half, the Coyotes went to Keko Moore (17 pts) down the stretch.  Like the Miramar game, the Coyotes allowed Grossmont to make open three point shots and were outscored 18 to 6 beyond the arc.
1/4/12 San Diego Mesa College -- The Coyotes lost a heartbreaker at San Diego Mesa 63-65.  The Coyotes trailed by double digits at half, but came back to tie the game with less than 3 minutes to play by playing inspired defense and sharing the ball on offense.  However, the Coyotes could not make a basket down the stretch and allowed Mesa back to back “and one’s” on drives to the basket.  The Coyotes were led by Armon Worrell (14 pts, 8 rebs, 4 blocks), Chioke Walker (14 pts), Terrence Cole (9 pts) & Dalawn Moss (9 pts).
12/28/11 Imperial Valley College -- In the consolation championship, the Coyotes led IVC by one at half, but lost 64-75.  The Coyotes were led by Keko Moore (15 pts), Chioke Walker (14 pts) & Dalawn Moss (9 pts & 7 assists).
12/28/11 Imperial Valley College -- The Coyotes beat Miramar on the second day of the Imperial Valley Tournament 59-58.  Trailing by two points with less than 2 seconds to play, Chioke Walker (30 pts & 10 rebs) intercepted a pass at Cuyamaca’s foul line and launched a ¾ court shot.  As the buzzer sounded, it banked in to give the Coyotes the victory.
12/28/11 Imperial Valley College -- The Coyotes began the Imperial Valley Tournament by playing against Glendale (AZ).  The Coyotes lost to Glendale (AZ) 60-77.  The Coyotes were led by Keko Moore (18 pts), Yuel Hagos (12 pts) & Jake Haar (6 assists).
12/14/11 San Diego City College -- The Coyotes were set to play their last game before Christmas break against San Diego City.  SDCC entered the game with an 8-4 record behind a high powered guard oriented attack.  The Coyotes would need to slow the game down by controlling tempo and City's transition game - for the first 25 minutes they did.  Although the Coyotes trailed 30-37 at half, they had controlled the game's tempo and cut the lead to 41-44 with 15 minutes to play on Keko Moore's (14 points) fast break layup.  However, the Coyotes went cold from the floor while City heated up.  The Coyotes lack of ball security (27 turnovers) cost them dearly as they lost the possession battle (75 - 91).  Even though Jake Haar (9 points & 11 rebounds) played tough inside while nursing his injured ankle, the Coyotes could not take advantage of their height advantage.  Coyotes lose 60-81.  The Coyotes received additional contributions from Dalawn Moss (11 points), Yuel Hagos (9 points) & Terrence Cole (4 assists).
12/9/11 Mira Costa College -- The Coyotes traveled to Mira Costa to face the 3-3 Spartans.  The Coyotes welcomed back Elgin Smith (4 points) after missing the last three weeks due to a concussion.  Mira Costa jumped out to a big first half lead. Yuel Hagos (9 points) made three consecutive 3's to keep the half-time score close at 35-44.  The Coyotes would need to slow down Mira Costa by controlling the tempo in the second half if they had any chance in evening their PCAC record.  In the second half, Keko Moore (24 points) & Chioke Walker (13 points) scored on drives and post ups.  Jake Haar (12 points) played inspired by demanding the ball  & scoring in the post, making great passes out of double teams and continuing to compete after sustaining an ankle injury.  With six minutes to play, the Coyotes trailed 50-62.  The Coyotes kept clawing at the lead through their half court offense and defense.  With 2:38 minutes to play, the Coyotes had cut the lead to 62-67.  Big stops followed by back to back post and back door plays enabled the Coyotes to take a two point lead with 20 seconds left.  Mira Costa shot two desperate shots but the Coyotes defense stiffened and they grabbed the rebound forcing Mira Costa to foul.  Keko Moore made one of two free throw shots and smartly grabbed his miss to secure the victory for the Coyotes 72-69.
12/2/11 Cuyamaca College -- The Coyotes opened PCAC play by hosting Imperial Valley.  IVC arrived with the highest state ranking among PCAC teams.  The Coyotes would once again play without two of their top three posts (both still out due to concussions).  IVC jumped out to a 18-30 halftime lead.  The Coyotes made adjustments to their zone offense and fed Chioke Walker (18 points) at the high post.  When Dalawn Moss (9 points) made his third three point shot followed by Keko Moore's (9 points & 8 rebounds) transition lay-up, the Coyotes cut the IVC lead to 46-52 with four minutes to play.  Unfortunately, the Coyotes went cold from the perimeter while IVC made clutch shots down the stretch.  Jake Haar had an unbelievable defensive performance against IVC's 6'10" center from the Congo.  Coyotes fall 48-62.
11/29/11 Santa Ana College -- The Coyotes traveled to Santa Ana in their final tune up before Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play begins on Friday.  Without forwards Elgin Smith & Armon Worrell (both out due to concussions), the Coyotes would have to play "big" against the tall, athletic Santa Ana team.  In the first half, the Coyotes did just that.  Behind Chioke Walker (30 points), the Coyotes shot 56% from the field and 54% from the 3 point arc to take a 38-22 half time lead.  The Coyotes knew the host team would come out playing hard in the second half.  While the Santa Ana made numerous runs in the second half, the Coyotes were able to hold on behind Walker, Yuel Hagos (9 points) & Terrence Cole's (8 points) big shots.  With the score tied at 57, Keko Moore (4 assists) found Chioke Walker on a backdoor lay-up.  After getting a stop, the Coyotes missed a lay-up and proceeded to give up an "and 1" with 31 seconds to play.  After a Coyote turnover and fast break lay-up by Santa Ana, the Coyotes desperate 3 point shot at the buzzer did not find the bottom of the net.  The Coyotes lose a heartbreaker 59-62.
11/23/11 Cuyamaca College -- The Coyotes had the unusual task of playing the same team twice in a row as they faced Irvine Valley in the Coyotes home opener.  The Coyotes played inspired basketball throughout the first half even though forward Armon Worrell was knocked out of the game with an elbow to his nose after four minutes.  With Jake Haar (9 points & 7 rebounds) & Keko Moore (10 points) scoring inside, guards Dalawn Moss (12 points & 3 assists) & Terrence Cole (11 points, 6 rebounds & 3 assists) controlled the perimeter.  However, when the undersized Coyotes (already playing without injured forward Elgin Smith) had Jake Haar pick up his 3rd foul with 9 minutes to play in the first half trailing 24-27 the Coyotes had to switch to their zone defense.  Irvine Valley responded by making 10 first half 3 pointers.  The 16 point half time lead was too large for the Coyotes to overcome.  Coyotes lose 57-79.
11/19/11 Irvine Valley College -- The Coyotes faced host Irvine Valley in the consolation championship.  The Coyotes would need to play inspired basketball to beat the host college.  Unfortunately, the Coyotes lack of dept showed in this third game of a three game tournament.  The Coyotes shot poorly (29%) while Irvine Valley seemed to make every shot (50% FG, 41% 3pt FG).  Coyotes lose 40-71.
11/18/11 Irvine Valley College -- The Coyotes were set to face Long Beach City College in an elimination game at the Irvine Valley Tournament.  The Coyotes trailed at halftime and when Jake Haar (8 points) fouled out with 14 minutes to play with the Coyotes trailing by nine points, it looked like the Coyotes might have another end of game collapse.  However, behind Chioke Walker (23 points) & Keko Moore (21 points & 3 assists) the Coyotes were able to slow down the game's tempo which favored Cuyamaca.  Guard Terrence Cole controlled the boards (11 rebounds) while Dalawn Moss (4 assists), Elgin Smith (5 rebounds) & Armon Worrell (5 rebounds) played smart basketball down the stretch.  Coyotes get their first win 62-59.
11/17/11 Irvine Valley College -- The Coyotes opened the Irvine Valley Tournament against Santa Monica College.  The Coyotes trailed by seven at halftime, but took a six point lead with 14 minutes to play by executing their offense and making the game a half court contest.  Unfortunately in the last 14 minutes Santa Monica was able to speed up the tempo (37 transition points) and score 18 second chance points.  The Coyotes were not able to take advantage of Jake Haar's (15 points & 10 rebounds) stellar performance.  Also leading the Coyotes were Terrence Cole (7 rebounds & 7 assists), Chioke Walker (9 points & 8 rebounds) & Elgin Smith (8 points & 6 rebounds).  Coyotes lose 69-90.
11/12/11 College of the Canyons -- The Coyotes faced Santa Ana in the third place game of the Canyons tournament.  The Coyotes second game looked a lot like the first with turnovers (22), lack of shooting (42% FG) and bad shots.  Although the Coyotes executed better in the second half, the Coyotes could not stop the taller Santa Ana team from scoring second chance points (12 points) and in the post (10 points).  The Coyotes received an outstanding effort from captain Jake Haar (18 points on 13 shots & 10 rebounds).  The Coyotes also received contributions from captain Chioke Walker (16 points & 7 rebounds), Terrence Cole (5 assists) & Elgin Smith (8 rebounds).  Coyotes lose 59-72.
11/11/11 College of the Canyons -- The Coyotes began their season playing East LA at the College of Canyons tournament.  This was East LA's second game after they beat Rio Hondo College by 31 points.  Even though the Coyotes jumped out to a 7-0 lead behind Terrence Cole (12 points), East LA remained poised while the Coyotes began to make mistakes that come with 9 out of 10 players playing in their first college game.  While East LA clawed back into the game, the Coyotes lack of execution on offense (18 turnovers to only 9 assists & only 33% FG) allowed East LA to take the halftime lead by seven (20-27).  In the second half, the Coyotes executed a little better, but Chioke Walker's (12 points) third foul placed the Coyotes rotation in turmoil.  Without the Coyotes starting forward (6'6") and backup forward (6'4") both out due to injury, forwards Jake Haar (8 points, 9 rebounds & 6 blocks) & Elgin Smith (8 points & 11 rebounds) had to control the boards by themselves.  Although the Coyotes cut the lead to 5 points with 4 minutes to play, the Coyotes turned the ball over, took bad shots and did not execute their offense down the stretch.  Coyotes lose 57-59.
