Accounting Program

The Accounting Program gives you, the student a well balanced introduction to the discipline of accounting and can provide the initial pathway toward a professional career in accounting, if that is what you choose. Irrespective of your choice, at Cuyamaca College, we can assist you with your educational goals over a wide and varied range of possibilities. Whether you wish to prepare for entry level employment in an accounting position with the Associate in Science degree, or your desire is to transfer to a four-year college or university program, we can help.

Who Our Students Are

Students of all ages come to our program with varied backgrounds and from diverse cultural heritages. We also find that our students have very different goals in mind with respect to their accounting education. Here is a composite sampling:

Lindsay works for a local software company. Her employer wants to see her advance within the company and is providing financial support to her educational pursuits. She is working toward the Associate in Science degree. This will give her specific training in accounting courses beyond the basic Financial and Managerial Accounting courses. She feels the classes that will be most helpful to her are Intermediate Accounting and the Analysis of Financial Statements.

William and Carol are a husband and wife team that owns their own small business. Both intend to enroll in a number of accounting courses that will be specific to keeping the books and records for their company. The courses most helpful to them will be Financial Accounting, Payroll Accounting, and the Computerized Accounting course with QuickBooks software.

Teresa is a transfer student. She is very clear about accounting; her desire is to take Financial and Managerial Accounting at Cuyamaca College to meet her Business transfer requirement to SDSU. She plans to major in information technology.  After taking the two basic accounting courses, she hopes never to see an accounting course again!

Ahmad is an accounting major. He is taking the Business transfer courses at Cuyamaca College and is scheduled to enroll at USD to pursue his accounting education. His goal is to work in public accounting and eventually achieve his CPA certificate in the state of California.

Margaret has always wanted to obtain training within the field of accounting and is considering doing some bookkeeping work from her home. At the moment her goals are more for personal achievement and enrichment, but she plans on keeping her options open for employment application in the future. Her immediate goal is to obtain the Bookkeeping Certificate.

Do you see yourself in any of the descriptions above? Perhaps your desire is an entry level job. The Associate in Science Degree with a major in Accounting does provide some possibilities for immediate employment. In many cases, accounting careers require additional education. Please read on.
