I                                                            COURSE DESCRIPTION

      This is a basic computer literacy course for those desiring beginning computer knowledge and skills. It is a full semester course. It includes an overview of a typical computer system, including input and output devices, the central processing unit, and storage devices. Also included is hands-on experience with a computer and popular application software. No previous experience with computers in required; however, you will be expected to be able to read and follow directions. Emphasis will be placed on those skills and knowledge needed to use and maintain a home or small business computer. (Specific software packages will be identified in the class schedule.)

 II                                                         COURSE PREREQUISITES

      This course makes no assumptions about the abilities of the student beyond a willingness to learn and interact with the instructor and fellow classmates. The ability to touch-type will be helpful.

 III                                                    METHODS OF INSTRUCTION

      Lecture, hands-on lecture, demonstration, hands-on lab exercises and projects, student reading/research, quizzes, tests, final exam - written and/or practical.

     The student will:

 A.        Gain an understanding of computer hardware components

1. Explain in general terms the components in a computer hardware system

2. Distinguish between the different sizes/types of computers

3. Identify the components of a computer: Input, Process, Output, and Storage

4. Identify the typical input, output, and storage devices

 

B.         Obtain facts about computer software

1. Explain the differences between and Operating System (OS) and application software

2. Demonstrate the use and function of an OS (Windows XP)

3. Explain the data structures within a computer

4. Explain the major functions and characteristics of application software

5. Demonstrate the basic operations in using an application

6. Describe the essential functions, characteristics, and challenges of the internet and how to access them

           

C.        Use application software

1. Prepare, edit, and print documents using a word processor

2. Use a spreadsheet program to create and edit documents and charts dealing with numbers and data

3. Make a presentation using electronic graphic presentation software

4. Demonstrate the ability to use internet browsing and researching software
