I.  Create a Syllabus for your Online Class

Defining syllabus broadly, the traditional syllabus should include not only:

  • a schedule of topics, readings, activities, and assignments, but
  • goals and objectives, procedures, and
  • any other information necessary for students to succeed.

Some online instructors separate the elements of a syllabus and group them into areas called "Course Information" or "Course Requirements."  I have placed mine on the course menu and call them "Syllabus" and "Course Schedule."  For the purpose of the syllabus assignment we will term all of these elements "syllabus."

A syllabus for an online class needs to include extra information.  In this assignment, you will clarify those differences and prepare a first draft of a syllabus. Chapter 4 in your textbook on Creating an Effective Online Syllabus offers some useful advice on what to include.  Here are some ideas

  • How the online class works
  • What students need (computer, Internet, software, skills, time)
  • Where students can find resources on campus (library computer lab, books on reserve, office hours, etc.)
  • Information about your Course Management System (CMS)
  • How to communicate with you and classmates (including expected turnaround time for response)
  • Expectations about student behavior (cheating, online communication, etc.)
  • Tips for success
  • URL for class site and/or CMS (Blackboard)

Using the Syllabus reference links below and your ideas for student support, create your syllabus for your online course. You may not have the information for many of the elements at this time such as your schedule of topics or assignments, but plan a complete syllabus outline with as much information as possible.

Identify a course syllabus to adapt.  If you don't have a course syllabus, you will need to borrow or create one.
