The department of Computer and Information
Science offers courses in:
COMPUTER NETWORKING
A network administrator is a modern professional responsible
for the maintenance of computer hardware and software that comprises
a computer network. This normally includes the deployment, configuration,
maintenance and monitoring of active network equipment. A related
role is that of the network specialist, or network analyst,
who concentrates on network design and security. Network Administrators
will normally have some of the following industry certifications:
- Cisco CCNA
- Cisco CCNP
- Microsoft Certified Technician (MCT)
- Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP)
- CompTIA's Network+, Security+, Linux+
- Certified Wireless Network Administrator (CWNA)
- Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC)
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
In today’s increasingly connected world, communication is vital.
These communications are so vital that many companies are seeking
to integrate all of their communications into a unified system.
Unified communications is the integration of real-time communication
services such as instant messaging (chat), presence information,
telephony (including IP telephony), video conferencing, call
control and speech recognition with non-real-time communication
services such as unified messaging (integrated voicemail, e-mail,
SMS and fax) via a consistent unified user interface and user
experience across multiple devices and media types.
Students in this program obtain the technical and management
skills necessary to enter careers in design, application, installation,
management, operation and/or maintenance of computer and telecommunications
networking systems including convergent voice, data and video
communications over IP networks.
WEB DEVELOPMENT
Web development is a broad term for the work involved
in developing a web site for the Internet (World Wide Web) or
an intranet (a private network). This can include web design,
web content development, client liaison, client-side/server-side
scripting, web server and network security configuration, and
e-commerce development.
Web developers can be found working in all types
of organizations, including large corporations and governments,
small and medium sized companies, or alone as freelancers. Some
web developers work for one organization as a permanent full-time
employee, while others may work as independent consultants,
or as contractors for an employment agency.
