Computer & Information Science Department: Internships

Work Experience is crucial . . .

. . . for anyone who wants to jump start a career in a technical field. Our Work Experience program lets you earn college credit while you gain practical experience.

To get started, contact Greg Differding (CIS Work Experience Coordinator) or Tim Buckles (Graphic Design Work Experience Coordinator) prior to the semester you wish to do your internship to discuss your qualifications, potential opportunities, and other program requirements.

Then enroll in CIS 267 for 1,2, 3, or 4 units.  You'll be expected to work 60 hours per unit over the semester (roughly 4 hours per week per unit). In addition to enrolling in CIS 267, you also need to be enrolled in a minimum of 3 additional units (other than CIS 267) and be actively pursuing a degree or certificate program in the CIS Department.

You can find your own internship or work with the coordinator to identify a good match. Here are some examples of businesses who have worked with us or are seeking interns:

  • Business E Store - an e-commerce web development company that helps companies with a web presence improve their presentation.  They are looking for interns with PHP, HTML (coding) and Flash in their repertoire of skills.
  • Web Technologies LLC - web development with database support, looking for highly competent html, xml and java coders, Flash (illustrators and coders), Photoshop media technician (layers, pixel depth, media conversion, editing).  Their clients include many Fortune 500 companies as well as the IRS.
  • Network Insight - Entry-level position as a Customer Service Engineer (click on link to see job description) and network operations center (NOC) duties.  Customer Service Engineer position is the logical starting point as you progress towards a network engineer position.
  • KGTV New 10 - General server room duties, desktop support, computer build-up, rack relocation.

In addition, short-term quick response intern opportunities frequently arise outside of the normal channels.  If you are interested in being considered for these, ensure the CIS Work Experience Coordinator has you on the list.

If you are interested in gaining that all important experience required for a great resume, now is the time to start planning for an internship.  Contact Greg Differding well in advance of the semester you desire an internship so that an appropriate company/position can be found.

You will need to provide a draft resume and/or a web design portfolio prior to  your first meeting with the CIS Work Experience Coordinator.
