Creativity Exercise
Take a few minutes to complete this creativity exercise as an illustration of how to use brainstorming to enhance creativity.

Part I

  1. Take out a sheet of paper and have pencil or pen ready.
  2. Next, look at this peanut:

  1. Write this question at the top of your paper, "How is this peanut like going to college?
  2. Set a timer for 3 minutes and see if you can think of 10 answers in 3 minutes.  Remember, do not censure yourself.  There is no such thing as a wrong answer.  You just need 10 answers.
  3. After 3 minutes, review your list.  Choose your best 2 answers.

For fun, here are some creative answers generated by my students:

  • There are 2 nuts inside.  One is the teacher and the other is the student.
  • We're all nuts to a degree.
  • College drives me nuts.
  • It's rough.
  • We both went to Dr. Fralick's class today.

Part II.

  1. Write this question at the top of you paper, "How is this peanut like myself (the college student)?"
  2. Set a timer for 3 minutes and see if you can come up with 10 answers or at least more answers than last time.
  3. After the 3 minutes, choose your best 2 answers.

For fun, here are some more creative answers generated by my students:

  • It's wrinkled, like me.
  • It's brown, like me.
  • It cracks under pressure.
  • What you see is not always what you get.
  • Everyone is different.
