Spanish 121 is a 5 unit, semester long course, designed for students having successfully completed Spanish 120 or the equivalent. Section 1817 is a special course, offered exclusively to those students wishing to take advantage of technology. Three hours of class per week will be delivered in the classroom and two hours will be delivered online. This is a Hybrid Spanish class. That means that the course is taught partly in the classroom and partly online. (We meet in the classroom for 3 hours per week, with the remaining 2 hours per week of the coursework to be completed online in our virtual classroom.) During our virtual class period you will have a number of tasks that you will be asked to complete before coming to class on Wednesday (see Calendar for specific assignments and due dates). Hybrid courses allow the student to benefit from both methods of teaching: online and face-to-face, and offer both advantages and challenges. First the challenges: Students enrolling in this course must have access to a reliable computer and good internet connection (high bandwidth). They must also competent at basic computer skills (word processing, PowerPoint, email, Web browsing, etc.). One of the main advantages of this hybrid course is that it offers students the flexibility to practice and review the material as much as you need and at times that are convenient for you. You can often work around your school, work and family commitments, though in-class sessions are not optional. While students can generally choose when and where to complete online assignments, there are strict deadlines for homework and tests. Deadlines are clearly specified in the calendar and absolutely no late assignments or tests will be given. For this reason, this course is designed only for well disciplined students who can work independently and keep to a schedule. Students must understand, however, that a course of this nature requires responsibility and dedication. If you are not a self-motivated learner or if you do not have easy access to a computer outside of class, you are strongly urged to enroll in a different section of Spanish 121. Special requirementsIt is assumed that students not only have access to a computer and internet connection, but that they are competent at basic computer skills (word processing, PowerPoint, email, Web browsing, etc.). Please see How Hybrid Classes Work for details about the structure of the course and what you should expect. Students need to have access to a reliable computer with a good Internet connection (high bandwidth) and word processing software.
Required TextThe textbook for this course is NOT available at the Student Bookstore, so DO NOT purchase the package until you are sure you will be taking this section of Spanish 121. The textbook package you will need to buy is available only through VHL Direct and includes a hard-backed textbook called Vistas, 3rd Edition (to be used in class), as well as En Línea, a fully online text (complete with workbook, lab manual and audio visual materials). If you already have a copy of Vistas, you will only need to purchase En Línea, by visiting VHL Direct (ISBN #:1-60007-333-6). (Note: we will not be using the Web SAM you may have used in Spanish 120). The package ISBN # is: 1-60007-373-5 and the cost of the package is $140. (For those students only needing to purchase En Línea, the package ISBN # is:1-60007-333-6, and the price is $105.00.) The good news is that the textbook, Vistas, will be used in Spanish 121 and 220, so you will not need to purchase another Spanish textbook next semester (or the semester after that).* *NOTE: Students deciding to switch to a traditional section of Spanish 121 (or Spanish 220) will be required to buy a code for the Web SAM (online Student Activities Manual) at an additional cost. So what do I need to be an online student? Here's what you need to be able to succeed in an online course:
