Architecture of the 20th Century
 

PURPOSE: This research guide has been created by your instructor and your librarian to help you complete your research paper: "Life and Success of one of the great architects in the 20th century".

RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT: Your research paper should include the five component

  1. Introduction with historical, political and cultural context.
  2. Life and Work of the architect.
  3. Outstanding Achievements to include design philosophy, projects (select 3 to 5), including illustrations, and professional awards
  4. Summary to include influence on others and critics viewpoints.
  • The research project must be typed and double-spaced.
  • Project illustrations have to be black/white or color copies, 81/2" x 11".

Reference sources on Cuyamaca College collection

  • Contemporary Architects, Latest edition is 1994. Well-known architects only. A good starting point for further research. Includes chronology of works and their locations, publications by and about, personal statements, and a biographical sketch. Ref NA40.C6x 1994
  • Dictionary of Art, 34 vols. Includes biographical citations and illustrations. The most comprehensive art and architecture encyclopedia available. Ref N31.D5 1996
  • International Dictionary of Architects and Architecture, a.k.a. Architects and Architecture. This two volume compilation covers 523 architects in Volume I and 467 buildings in Volume II. Includes a chronology of works and their locations, publications by and about architects and works, biographical sketches. Volume II serves as companion material to the entries in Volume I. non-Western architecture is not included. Ref NA40.I48x
  • MacMillan Encyclopedia of Architects, Entries for architects of all periods including those less well-known but excluding those born since 1930. Articles vary in scope but all include a short list of works and a brief bibliography. Ref NA40.M25x 1982
