Assignment
Pre-Reading Research and Discussion for Motorcycle Ride on
the Sea of Tranquility.
Your research assignment
Soon the class will begin reading Motorcycle Ride on the Sea
of Tranquility. Much of the story takes place in 1969, so in
preparation for the reading, the class will be place in groups
and asked to do a bit of research on one of five topics
connected with the 1960’s and early 1970’s. Two groups will
research each topic. Students must make notes from the
information they find on their topic then as a group, students
need to develop a three-minute presentation that will be given
to the entire class. The presentations will be given in the
English 98R. The following are the five topics:
1) The Vietnam War
(draft, protest movements, media coverage, napalm etc.)
2) The Women’s Movement
(NOW, Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem)
3) Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder (causes, symptoms, effects, and if
possible specific info about
experiences of Viet Nam
vets)
4) Hippie Movement
(counter-culture philosophy, music, etc.)
5) Race to the moon
(in particular the build up to the landing in 1969)
