Your English 110 Assignment
is to write an essay in which you argue for or against one of the three
options below (PAGE 369 IN YOUR BOOK).
Support and defend your argument by using a minimum of
three sources (one for each body paragraph) and a maximum of
five sources.
Step 1: Select from one of these broad
topics
- Option 1:
Jails are overcrowded in the United States. Furthermore, jails often function as
“schools for crime” in which petty lawbreakers learn to become
hardened criminals. Of course, it is necessary to put violent
criminals in jail to protect others. But society would benefit
if nonviolent criminals received punishments other than jail
sentences.
-
Option 2:
Is corporal punishment an effective way of
disciplining adults or children? For
children physical punishment “works” in the sense that it may stop a
child from misbehaving, but adults who frequently spank and
hit are also teaching children that violence is a good
method of accomplishing a goal.
Nonviolent methods are a more effective way of training
children
-
Option 3:
Should gambling be made illegal in the United
States or at least restricted? Tourists
flock to gambling venues large and small to try
their luck. Residents work in many facets of the
industry, and gaming revenues are an important
part of the state's economy. California has more
gaming tribes than any other state.
