Course Objectives:
This course is a beginning course of German and will cover
the introductory chapter plus chapters 1 through 3 of the textbook Kontakte. The course fosters a base for oral fluency in
German and introduces beginning reading and writing skills. Cultural aspects are also
integrated into the course to enrich the language-learning experience.Methods of
Instruction:
The instruction will be mostly in German. Explanations in English will be given if
necessary. Students will learn German through the use of
dialogues, application of grammar points, German songs, and
real life situations.

Terrel et al, Kontakte, 3rd ed. (McGraw-Hill)
Terrel et al, Kontakte Arbeitsbuch, 3rd ed. (McGraw-Hill) (optional)
Optional: Audiocassettes to accompany the Arbeitsbuch (these cassettes are also
available for student use in the Language Lab).
Listening exercises in the Arbeitsbuch are optional but highly recommended.
Evaluation:
Written Midterm Exam: 35% of the total grade
Final Project: Quiz on chapter 3 - 15% of the total grade
Oral Presentation - 50% of the total grade
The Oral Presentation consists of a 5-minute oral presentation in German on the topic of
the students choice, followed by questions and answers. |
