Cuyamaca GeoNews

This is where we'll announce the most recent additions to our web site. If you've visited us before and want to know what's changed, take a look here first.

The Environmental Sustainability Committee at Cuyamaca College is working toward making the Campus both environmentally friendly and enjoyable for students and staff alike.  You will notice that the watering system is more efficient, because the campus has installed a computerized system.  This means that there are sensors that will automatically turn off the water if it's raining, and turn it on if there is not enough moisture to keep the plants alive.  It's already saving water and money for the school!

Phi Theta Kappa is doing recycling on campus, taking bottles and cans to the recycling center to make money for charitable causes.

Cuyamaca College is also committed to using recycled paper products, and is looking at how we can encourage students to buy a refillable water bottle or coffee cup to use in food services.  This would reduce the amount of trash we send to the dump, and be far better for the environment!

Desert Tower, California

The Geography 121 Lab visits sites such as Desert Tower, which overlooks the San Diego and Imperial County deserts and the Salton Sea.  It also has trails that show off "unique" rock formations!

NOVEMBER 13  was the Great California Shake Out!  The Cultural Geography class that I teach conducted a test of the evacuation plan for our classroom, as well as the "duck and cover" system.  We found out that the desks are too small in the LCR for the men to fit under, and that it was a good thing for us all to rehearse and know what we were doing.  We also agreed that no one is really ready, and that the more water and food you have at home, the better off you will be.  Be ready for 3 to 4 weeks of fending for yourself, and months of not being able to do more than camp at your home if you haven't done some serious preparation for the upcoming earthquake.  Go to links to see more.
