SECTION 1 – Fundamentals of Using Windows 98

 

Note: When the word “Click” is used below, it means for you to depress the left button on your mouse.

 

 

Starting a program (application)

1.       Click on “Start” button (Located at lower left corner of screen)

2.       Move the Mouse’s pointer up to “Programs” (on the pop-up menu)

3.       Without clicking, continue moving the pointer over the next sub-menu(s) and place the mouse pointer on top of the program you wish to open and “Click.”

 

Tool Tips

1.       Use the mouse to point to the Start button. After a few seconds, you will see the tipClick here to begin.” Each button or icon will give you a tool tip when the pointer is held directly over it.

 

Running Multiple Programs Simultaneously

1.       Open the first program as previously explained.

2.       Open additional programs the same way.

3.       To switch between programs, click the taskbar button that contains the name of the program to which you want to switch.

 

Using Find to Locate Files

1.       Click on the Start button located on the left side of the Taskbar.

2.       Move the Mouse pointer up to Find.

3.       Continue moving the pointer over to the sub-menu and place it on Files or Folders to highlight it. Click on Files or Folders. This action opens the Find: All Files dialog box.

4.       Insert the cursor in the Named: textbox located on the Name & Location tab.

5.       Type the name of the file or program you seek.

6.       When the search has been completed, right-click on the file/program, move the mouse pointer to Open in the pop-up menu and click.

 

Getting Help

1.       Click the Start button.

2.       Click Help.

3.       To select a help topic in the list box of the Contents tab, click the topic (preceded by a closed book icon) to expand all of its subtopics (preceded by a document with a question mark). Then click the subtopic to display its steps in the frame on the right.

4.       To select a help topic on the Index tab, click this tab and then select any entry in the text box at the top and replace it with the first few characters of the subject you want help on. When Windows selects the topic you’re interested in Click the Display button at the bottom to display its information in the frame on the right.

5.       Click the window’s Close button to close the Help window

 

Create A Shortcut

            Complete steps 1 – 4 under Create A Shortcut above.

1.       Type the name of the Program you wish to create a shortcut.

2.       When the search has been completed, right-click on the file/program. In the pop-up menu, move the mouse pointer down to Create Shortcut and click.

3.       A prompt will appear telling you “Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be place on the desktop instead?” Click Yes. Click on the close button to close the Find dialog box. (You will find the shortcut on your desktop.)

 

Opening a Document/Program with a Shortcut Icon

1.       To open a document or program, double-click on the desktop icon.

 

Deleting Shortcut Icons

1.       To delete a desktop icon, position mouse pointer on icon, right-click, and then click on Delete.
A Confirm Folder Delete warning will appear. Click on Yes.

 

Manipulating a Window

1.       To Minimize a window:

a.       Click the Minimize button. The window shrinks so only the document’s name is on a button in the taskbar. To restore the document to its previous size, click on the document’s button in the taskbar.

2.       The Restore button reduces the window so it is smaller than the entire screen.

3.       To Move a window:

a.       Position the mouse pointer on the window’s title bar.

b.       While you hold down the left mouse button, move the mouse to drag the window. (A rectangle representing the window moves as you move the mouse.)

c.       Position the rectangle where you want it on the screen, then release the left mouse button. The window appears in the new location.

4.       Changing the Size of the Window:

a.       Position the pointer over the edge or corner of the window. The pointer changes to a diagonal arrow.

b.       While holding down the left mouse button, drag the edge or corner to the size you want.

c.       Release the mouse button. Now the window is in its adjusted size.

5.       To Maximize the window, click on the Maximize button on the title bar.

 

 

Viewing & Changing Object Properties

1.        Right-click the object whose properties you want to view.

2.        Click Properties on the menu that opens.

3.        Click the tab for the property sheet you want to view.

4.        Change the appropriate settings.

5.        Click the Apply button to apply the changes and leave the property sheet open, or click the OK button to apply the changes and close the property sheet.

 

SECTION 2 – Using Windows Explorer

 

Opening Windows Explorer

1.       Click on the Start button and move the mouse’s pointer up to Programs.

2.       Without clicking, move the mouse pointer over to the right, then down the sub-menu and click on Windows Explorer.

 

       NOTE: Until indicated, all of the following tasks can all be performed through Windows

                    Explorer, thus instructions to open and close Windows Explorer after each task will

                    be omitted.

 

Formatting a floppy disk

            To format a diskette in Drive A of your computer, follow these steps:

1.       Insert a new diskette or a used one you want to clear.

2.       In the All Folders pane on the left, right-click on 3 ½ Floppy  [A:].

3.       Click on the Format command from the A: drive’s shortcut menu to open the Format dialog box.

4.       Click “Full” in Format Type.

5.       Under Other Options, type in a label for this disk in the Label text box, or click on the No Label check box.

6.       Leave the Display summary when finished check box checked.

7.       Click the Start button to begin formatting the disk.

8.       When the formatting process is complete, the Format Results dialog box will appear. Be sure that a “0” precedes bytes used by system files and bytes in bad sectors. If there is any other number before these two categories, there could be a problem with your disk.

 

 Copying Files and Folders

1.       Open the window that contains the items to be copied, as well as the window with the folder or disk to which you want to copy the items.

2.       Select the item(s) to be copied.

3.       Hold down the Ctrl key as you drag the selected items to your destination folder. (Note: If you have only one item to copy, you do not need to hold down the Ctrl key while you drag.)

4.       When the destination folder icon is selected (highlighted), drop the selected items into the destination folder by releasing the mouse button.

 

Moving Files and Folders

1.       Open the window that contains the items to be moved, as well as the window with the folder or disk to which you want to move the items.

2.       Select the item(s) to be moved.

3.       Right click and Hold down the Ctrl key as you drag and move the selected items to the destination folder. (Note: If you have only one file or folder to move, you do not need to hold down the Ctrl key when you drag.)

4.       When the destination folder icon becomes highlighted, release the right mouse button. At the pop-up menu, click on Move Here.

 

Selecting Multiple Files in Explorer to Copy or Move

1.       For non-consecutive files, click on the first file, then depress and continue to hold down the Ctrl key while you select additional files.

2.       For Consecutive files, click on the first file in the group, then depress and continue to hold down the Shift key while you click on the last file in the group.

                                                                       

Copying a Disk to Another Disk

1.       Insert the disk you want to be copied into the A drive.

2.       In the All Folders window, highlight, right-click on 3 ½ Floppy (A:), and then click on Copy Disk.

3.       When the Copy Disk dialog box appears, click on Start.

4.       When prompted, remove the disk you want to copy. Insert your blank disk into the A drive. Click OK. (If your blank disk has not been formatted, the computer will prompt you to format it, then allow you to continue copying the first disk to the second.)

5.       When the copy is complete, close the Copy Disk dialog box.                                    

 

Renaming a File

1.       Click the file to rename in the Content window, then right-click.

2.       Click on Rename. After a short pause, a solid box outlines the label and an insertion point appears.

3.       Type the new file name, and then press the Enter key.

 

Deleting a File

1.       Select the file(s) to delete in the Content window, then right-click. (If more than one file, refer to the instructions above regarding multiple selecting.)

2.       Click on Delete in the pop-up menu.

 

Creating New File/Folders

1.       Select the drive or file folder in the All Folders window where you wish to add a file or folder.

2.       Right-click in the Contents window.

3.       In the pop-up menu, click on New.

4.       Move the mouse pointer over to the sub-menu, then click on Folder.

5.       When the New Folder appears in the Contents window, replace the temporary folder name (New Folder) by typing a name of your choosing and then press the Enter key.

       

How Much Space Is Left?

1.       To learn how much space is left on the disk, highlight the disk or drive in the All Folders window, right-click, then click on Properties in the pop-up menu, then click on Properties.

2.       Select the tab labeled General to view amount of used and unused space.

 

Properties of a file

1.       To learn what type of file, where located in your computer, file size, date created or modified, highlight the file folder in the Contents window.

2.       Right-click on the file folder. Move the mouse pointer down and click on Properties.

 

Expanding & Collapsing Folders

1.       Expand a folder in the All Folder window by clicking on the (+) sign in front of the folder.

2.       Collapse a folder by clicking on the (-) sign in front of the folder.

 

Changing the View of Files in the Contents List

1.       There are 4 choices, large icons, small icons, list, and details.

2.       Select a disk or folder in the All Folders window.

3.       Click on the down arrow to the right of Views.

4.       In the drop-down menu, click on the selections to see which one you like.

 

Arraigning Files in the Contents List

1.       Make sure the files you want to arrange are displayed in the Contents list.

2.       Click the Name, Size, Type, or Modified button once to view files in ascending order and twice to view files in descending order.

 

Closing Windows Explorer

1.       Click the Close button to close the Exploring window and return to the Windows 98 desktop.

 

Exiting Windows

1.       Close all open applications.

2.       Click on the Start Button

3.       Click on Shut Down

4.       Click on Restart the Computer

5.       Click on Yes or press Enter on the keyboard.
