Decked out in red, white, blue and - of course - leather, nearly 100
Harley-Davidson riders yesterday offered companionship and some of
life's little necessities to disabled, injured and chronically ill veterans.

Harley Owners Groups from San Diego and Orange counties made a
40-minute run from Harley's House of Harleys in Oceanside to the La
Jolla Veterans Affairs Medical Center to deliver toothpaste, shaving
cream, socks and T-shirts to veterans such as Mark Soet.

"I got some stuff I really need," said Soet. He is recovering from a fall he
took at work in his Black Canyon City, Ariz., Harley repair shop. "I think
this is a very thoughtful thing. It's perfect timing for me."

Soet said he appreciated the gifts and companionship since he is far
from home, knows no one in San Diego and just ran out of toothpaste.

Jeff Neylon, himself an "an ex-Navy guy," organized the Run of Honor
for the third straight year. He said many Harley riders are veterans and
feel it's important to let those hospitalized know they are appreciated
for what they've done for the country.

"It means a lot to these vets," Neylon said after the ride. "It's hard for
them to get things they need, the little things. It's not hard for us."

Harley groups put the word out and gathered truckloads of donated
items, mostly toiletries, for the event.

The riders, from Oceanside, Chula Vista, El Cajon, San Diego and Orange
County, wore or adorned their motorcycles with patriotic colors. But
they wouldn't be Harley riders if they didn't also wear their leather.

Mike Myers, dressed in black leather chaps, participated in the ride. He
said being a part of the pack of riders heading south on Interstate 5 was
an amazing experience, especially since it was for such a worthy cause.

"We have very strong feelings about doing this," he said. "It's fun and the
least we can do."

Nonnie Artero, a voluntary services specialist at the veterans hospital,
said donations are accepted and appreciated all year long. Those
interested in donating can call her at (858) 552-7417.

Soet, dressed in a Harley T-shirt and sweat pants, thanked the group of
men and women riders as they headed toward the next room.

"God bless you guys," he said.
