MERRYL NELSON is currently in her first year as Choral Director at Cuyamaca College where she also teaches Music Theory & Practice 1.  She concurrently teaches at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, California, where she is in her eighteenth year as Choral Director.  In addition to her teaching activities, she serves as Chair of the Performing Arts Department and as a member of the Visual & Performing Arts Strategic Plan Committee for Grossmont Union High School District. Merryl has directed choirs of all ages for more than thirty years in public and private schools as well as churches. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance from the University of Redlands with additional study at the Eastman School of Music, Butler University, San Diego State University, University of California San Diego, Fresno State University, and Grossmont College. She holds the Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from San Diego State University.

In addition to teaching, Merryl is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and served on the Executive Board of the California chapter from 2000-2004. She served as President for the California Music Educators Association-Southern Border Section (CMEA-SBS) from 2007 to 2009, and currently serves as High School Honor Choir Coordinator. In 2010, Merryl was awarded CMEA’s Outstanding Choral Educator Award for the state of California.
