Ku-Ring-Gai Council

This council has used satellite technology to aid their street tree management program by using aerial surveys to compare tree canopy growth and density.

Mr. Drago heads up the street tree program among other responsibilities. Here he is explaining their tree survey and tree replacement program using aerial surveys.

Tree Canopy Comparison 1992 - 2002

The map in this photo was made from an aerial survey comparing the overall tree canopy for the Ku-Ring-Gai Council area. The first survey was taken after a severe storm damaged many trees in the area in 1991. After the storm the council embarked on a plan to increase the tree canopy utilizing natives where possible. They also had a goal of linking bushland areas (shown in green) by increasing planting in the corridors between the native bushland areas. Red indicates a canopy decrease, blue a canopy increase and pink is unchanged.

Canopy Density

This aerial survey map shows Tree Canopy Condition. Dark green areas indicate dense canopy, yellow is medium density and pink shades indicate sparse and very sparse areas. The light green is native bushlands.
