In 1550 the Medici family bought the Pitti Palace and began work to work got under way to enlarge the palace and build a series of gardens on the slopes of the Boboli hillThe Boboli Gardens were designed by Niccolò Pericoli, between 1550 and 1558His design was used as a basis for royal gardens in Europe, including Versailles,  The gardens continued to be added to and modified with the last major addition being completed about the time they were opened to the public in 1776.
