Orvieto, Italy  Return to the index page

Orvieto is situated on the valley of the Paglia river. It was an important Etruscan centre with the name of "Volsinii Veters".  In Roman times it was a prosperous centre for its production of ceramics.  In 1354 it became a city of the Church Estate until 1798.  It was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.  In Orvieto one can see the typical landscape andplantings of the hilltop towns of Umbria and Tuscany.

A hike into town.

Not much room for landscapes.

Landscapes are mostly in courtyards and on balconies like the one here.
