SYLLABUS
COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is a computer literacy course designed for students in a variety of disciplines. It includes :

a. The use of computers for business applications.

b. An overview of current and possible future applications.

c. Common computer systems and their design.

d. Computer terminology and concepts.

Students will have the opportunity to use computers completing lab projects using Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and the Windows Operating System. The lab projects will apply the use of the computer in a wide variety of applications with an emphasis in business. The course emphasis will be on developing general problem solving abilities using the computer. Students will also study the impact of the computer on our society.


COURSE GOALS
  1. Explain computer terminology from a list of terms.
  2. Demonstrate the use of computers for solving problems using spreadsheets
  3. Discuss the uses of computers from microcomputers to supercomputers.
  4. Explain a typical information processing cycle.
  5. Describe various input/output devices and their purpose.
  6. Define the purpose of the operating system.
  7. Describe the different types of computer storage and their uses.
  8. Create, edit, save, and print documents using word processor.
  9. Describe the guidelines for purchasing a computer and software.
  10. Relate how computers are used in a network environment.

REQUIRED TEXT & MATERIALS

1. TEXT and LAB BOOK: Using

O'Leary Series:  Microsoft Windows 98; Microsoft Internet Explorer; Microsoft Word;  Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Access; Microsoft PowerPoint. 
Hutchinson, Sawyer:  Computers, Communications, & Information, Seventh Edition

CAUTION: DO NOT OPEN BOOKS UNTIL YOU ARE DIRECTED TO DO SO

2. At least one Floppy Disk 3.5" HD (MUST BE 3.5" HIGH DENSITY - 1.44 Meg.)

STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITIES

ATTENDANCE:

Students are expected to attend EVERY CLASS MEETING AND BE ON TIME.

It is your responsibility to inform me of any absences.

Students may be dropped from the class for excessive absences (missing twice the number of hours that a class meets in a week)

If you have a problem attending any class meetings contact me immediately.

Poor attendance may result in a lower grade.

Disruptive students may be dropped from the class at my discretion.

All cell phones and pagers are to be turned off turning class.  No calls are to be made or received during class.


MISSED CLASS MEETINGS:

Students are responsible for all lecture materials, handouts and assignments from missed class meetings.

You can obtain information on missed material from your lab partners.

Limited copies of handouts may be available until the next class meeting.

I will not repeat missed lectures.


DROPPING THE CLASS:

It is your responsibility to complete the necessary forms to withdraw from the class. If you do not drop the class it is possible that you will remain listed on the class roster and receive a grade of F.


ASSIGNMENTS:

All reading assignments should be completed BEFORE CLASS.

Students are expected to bring their books and disks to each class meeting.


QUIZZES and PRACTICAL EXAMS

Practical exams will be given at the end of each lab section (PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access ).

Quizzes will be given about once a week on the lecture material. These quizzes will generally consist of about 20 to 40 true/false. multiple choice, matching, and/or fill-in questions.

There are no make-ups for quizzes on the lecture material, unless prior arrangements have been made.


MIDTERM EXAM and FINAL EXAM

The Midterm and Final Exams will be held according to the schedule.

The Midterm Exam date may be changed due to class progress.

The midterm exams is comprehensive.  The Final exam is approximately 30% comprehensive and 70% on the final four chapters.

There WILL NOT be any makeup for the Final exam without prior arrangements.

If you think you might miss the Midterm or Final contact me prior to the date of the exam.

If you miss the Midterm without making prior arrangements, you may be dropped.

CAUTION !!! Students who do not take the Final Exam may receive a grade of F for the course.
TUTORING

Tutoring is available.  If you feel you will need this, apply early as there has been delays in getting tutoring in previous semesters.

Important Dates:

MIDTERM –   See handout given in class.

FINAL EXAM – Tuesday, , 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Last Day to DROP without a W – August 31.

Last Day to ADD a full semester class - August 31.

Last Day to APPLY for CR/NCR – September 22.

Last Day to APPLY for a Degree or Certificate – October 13.

Last Day to DROP with a W - November 9.

*THESE FIGURES WILL BE SUPPLIED IN THE NEAR FUTURE.  The figures for quizzes are estimates.  Each chapter will be approximately 30 questions but could be a few more or a few less.  All assignment points are based on completing all work as outlined in the class schedule, which is part of the syllabus.   These figures can, and probably will change as we progress in the semester.   The practical exam, midterm exam, and final exam are also estimations and could vary by a few points.  There will also be occasional opportunities for extra credit points to be earned.
