COURSE DESCRIPTION A course to develop basic knowledge of information technology using computer information systems and the related software used with those systems. The broad overview of topics includes computer organization, hardware and software systems, and application software. Approximately one third of the lab portion of the course will consist of hands-on problem-solving using spreadsheets, the remainder of the lab portion will consist of hands-on problem-solving using databases. This course is articulated with SDSU IDS 180 and covers the same material which is presented in that course. COURSE GOALS 1. explain computer terminology and acronyms and what they mean. 2. demonstrate the use of computers for solving problems using spreadsheets. 3. discuss the uses of computers from microcomputers to supercomputers. 4. explain a typical information processing cycle. 5. describe various input/output devices and their purpose. 6. define the purpose of the operating system and it's utility programs. 7. describe the different types of computer storage and their uses. 8. create, edit, save, and print documents using different office applications. 9. describe the guidelines for purchasing a computer and software. 10. how computers are used in a network environment. 11. use the Internet and e-mail to do research and send messages.
