GENERAL ONLINE COURSE INFORMATION

History 108 and History 109 Courses Spring 2008 Are Entirely Online.

Assignments are generally to read 1-2 chapters of the text each week. At times you will be reading outside assignments on the Internet. There is a weekly attendance participation discussion board where you discuss the content of the reading assignments. There will be weekly assignments: quizzes on the text material (open book), writing assignments based on the textbook and websites, discussion board assignments and closed book timed unit exams. All assigned work is asynchronous. You will not have any set time to log in to the course; however in order to be successful you must log onto the course often to participate in class work and there are weekly deadlines for assignments.

Online courses can be more difficult than “face to face” classes as an online course requires active learning for the student. In many face to face classes the student can “disengage” at times, sit in class “passively” and allow the instructor to do the work.  In my online classes you are responsible for keeping current in the reading and showing your understanding the assignments by posting to the discussion boards and dialoging with your instructor and fellow classmates. My expectation is that you log onto the online classroom often to post to the discussion boards and to read the posts as well. This is where I communicate with you. If you don’t have the time to log on to the course often to read the announcements, emails, and discussion board posts as well as fulfill the reading and homework on a weekly basis, this course is not for you. Enrolling in both of my online history courses in the same semester is not recommended unless you have above average reading and writing skills.

Is Online for You?

The Cuyamaca College website has information that might help you in deciding whether you wish to take an online course.  See http://www.cuyamaca.net/online/what.asp

This website should help you decide if you are the type of student that will be successful in an online format. http://www.rcas.org/rconline/onlinelearning.html

Also see the Cuyamaca College Class Schedule Spring 2008 at the top of the page 4:  “Is Online for You” and “Misconceptions concerning Online classes.”

Required Hardware and Software:

You need access to a computer with reliable Internet access. You will need word processing software. I recommend any version of MSWord or MSWorks. Some assignments require the free download of Real Player and Windows Media player.
