Findings Introduction

The purpose of CC Library’s assessment plan is to collect and analyze data that measures how well students are learning the components of information competency.  Are our students learning what we think is essential to becoming information competent?  If not, should our teaching strategies be modified?  What other approaches and resources would help our students learn more effectively? The results of the survey will help us to determine if the participants demonstrate the information literacy skills necessary to successfully meet the expectations of the institution and the faculty.

PROBLEM and CHALLENGES
There are many published articles on information literacy, lists of competencies, and descriptions of information literacy programs and courses. However, there are limited assessment tools that measure student competencies.  Most focus on evaluating library instruction. For example, pre-test/post-test measures assess the desired effect of particular library instruction sessions but they do not test general information competence.  Furthermore, user surveys rating satisfaction and describing library use do not provide objective skills assessment.

PROCESS EVALUATION

Librarians explained the process of working with faculty on an individual basis on the assignment level. Pluses included taking better advantage of the library resources, incorporating information literacy on an assignment level and being able to design the library instruction for classes that are more specific to the assignment, therefore relate more to the student experience.  Since librarians have experience with information literacy standards and the various formats that information comes in, they make a good collaboration member to brainstorm assignment ideas with.

GOAL 1: Student Information competency skills measurement of assessment and criteria for success:

Students will recognize the need for information, find it on-line and in-print, evaluate it, and use it in academic and vocational settings.

Assessment Tool is a Reference Desk Card . This study will produce information on student library users and their information seeking skills acquired after a reference desk interview.  We will have created no control or comparison groups.  The study will have a descriptive or observational design.  Participants will not be retested at a later date as no coding for tracking them will be built in, as would happen in a cohort study.

Our survey will be based on the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, (Appendix A) which sates, "

Librarian will demonstrate the keyword and subject browsing features of the databases, and the student will to learn how to progress from quantity of search results to quality records effectively and efficiently. "

Objectives of assignment:

Students learn retrieving "the most relevant information with the least effort."

• Students perform information retrieval effectively and efficiently after they understand the difference between keywords and subject searches

The instructor will explain the differences between keywords and subject terms while comparing and demonstrating them on an appropriate database.
A good method to achieve this part is to ask the class to suggest words that can have different meanings, and may even be used as proper names of persons, places, etc.

An example is Rosemary (as an herb and a proper name). Search for rosemary (herb) by entering it as a keyword in the search box. Attract the students’ attention to the number of hits, and a record where Rosemary is used as a personal (proper) name. Now, use the subject headings of the database and browse for rosemary. Ask students to explain the difference in the precision and quantity of the search result in keyword searching and subject browsing

GOAL 2: Collection development measure of assessment and criteria for success: ]

Introduction
The CC Library ensures that students use library resources as an integral part of their education. Library resources  owned by CC Library are appropriate in quality, level, scope, and currency to support and enrich the Library'ss mission. Cooperative reciprocal agreement between SDSU and other libraries are ways of supplementing rather than substituting for the Library's own adequate and accessible collection. In addition to curriculum support, the library provides materials that support faculty teaching and the intellectual, cultural, and personal development of the community

Goal 3: C. Technical and physical services measure of assessment and criteria for success:

Facility and Environment

The institution provides accessible facilities with a welcoming atmosphere that encourages inquiry, study, and learning among students. The physical layout includes multiple-use space accommodating individual and group study. The overall size of the library supports the teaching and learning of the institution, including space for efficient use of collections, staff operations, storage, and administrative and educational technology. The library facility and equipment is up-to-date, properly maintained, repaired in a timely manner, and secured
