49 miles

From home in EastLake I ride via Birch Road to State 125. This is the toll road south, also one of those rare routes where bicycles are allowed on the expressway. After a long descent into Otay Valley, followed by a climb up the ever-impressive Otay Valley bridge, I turn west for a few flat miles on Otay Mesa Road until it becomes SR 905.

I turn north onto Ocean View Hills Parkway, which ultimately becomes Palm Avenue and veers west through Otay Mesa. At Montgomery High School I turn north onto Beyer Boulevard, then left at Main, heading west until I hit Swiss Park and the entrance to the world's greatest bike path.

From the foot of Main Street, up I go. There's nothing more beautiful than sunrise over Glorietta Bay, my legs aching, an Elephant beer in one hand and a granola bar in the other. I contemplate a few more hours of riding home to the east, and I can barely see my destination, Mount San Miguel, looming in the hazy distance, EastLake at its foot.
From Swiss Park, I ride Main Street east to the Brandywine hill, then the long slog to EastLake on Olympic.
