COYOTES PREPARE FOR HOME OPENER!
The team has been working hard since the end of August preparing for their first official contest vs. El Camino college.
With several new bodies, this year is a building one, continuing the mission set forth by Head Coach Lorri Sulpizio and her staff in their first season last year. That mission is clear: "Improve. Get Better. Make this a competitive program throughout San Diego and across the state." With strong leadership from returning sophomores Muriah Pettiford and Kurstyn Simmons, the Coyotes are ready for action. Several key freshman have integrated well into the program and will play critical roles on this year's team. Come catch the Coyotes in action, November 7th at 6:00pm.
Allen Injured, Cuyamaca loses by 1
A big game by Clark and Banks wasn't enought
The Coyotes lost to San Diego Mesa by one Wednesday January 21. Cuyamaca came into the game expecting a challenge, especially since point guard, and leading scorer Jamaisa Allen injured her ankle the day before in practice.
The team had to make some adjustments at the point guard position, yet despite leading by 8 at two different times in the game, the team couldn't do enough to get the win. Nine missed freethrows, and 20 turnovers didn't help. But the game was not without opportunity for the Coyotes.
The team missed some layups at the end of the game and committed fouls which put Mesa at the line. Both Annie Mae Horne and Tiffany Tooson fouled out.
But there were several positives to this tough loss. The team played as "hard as they ever played" for the two halves. Freshman Crisela Banks scored 17 points, including 13 freethrows in a row....a team record. Freshman Trina Clark scored 18 points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
"On one hand, the players did everything we could expect them to do," Coach Sulpizio commented. "Allen not only brings up the ball, gets us in our offense, but also scores 20 points a game. That's a big loss for us. Yet it is these opportunities that will make our freshman better. These games are where the freshman grow into better players, and right now, this focus of this program is on growing and getting better."
Allen will be out for two weeks, but will return to conference play with 7 games left in the season. She will miss a total of 4 games, and is currently undergoing treatment.
COYOTES GET OVERTIME WIN
AGAINST SAN DIEGO CITY
The Coyote team pulled off an overtime victory, hosting San Diego City college on Saturday, January 10th. The second conference game, Cuyamaca was looking for win. After ending last season winless in conference, the team was ready to prove they had turned the corner and had become a competitive program. And compete they did!
After getting down by 16 points early in the game, the Coyotes rallied in the first half to enter half-time up by two. They jumped up to lead as big as 10, but the Knights were'nt going away without a fight. Jamisa Allen had the last shot of regulation, and missed a shot at the top of the key.
Allen would get another chance, however, and down by three with less than a minute less to go, Allen pulled up and drained a 3-pointer to tie up the game. SD City had the possession, but a big defensive play by freshman Neisha Holt, who took a charge, gave the ball back to Cuyamaca.
Attempting to run a play to get a shot off for the win, Crisela Banks got fouled. Double bonus would allow her two free throws. With 5 seconds left on the clock, and the score tied Banks sank both shots from the stripe to put Cuyamaca up by two.
The team would hold off City and get their first conference win. "This win sent a message to the conference that Cuyamaca has a new team that has made changes and looks forward to competing with all teams in the conference," said Coach Cathy Bass.
Coach Sulpizio agreed, "We're all working hard to build something new here. Something that represents great basketball. Being able to finish down the stretch, to make those big plays at the end of the game--that shows progress...it shows we are working toward great basketball."
Cuyamaca is now 1-1 in conference and will host district rival Grossmont on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7pm.
WOMEN TAKE 2ND PLACE IN COYOTE HOLIDAY CLASSIC
After beating Mission College and College of the Desert, the Coyotes earned a spot in the championship game of their own Holiday Classic, which brought them a battle against 7th ranked (State of Calif) LA City.
It's was a great honor for the Coyotes to get to a championship game and compete so well against one of California's top teams. Cuyamca lost to LA City by 11.
Jamaisa Allen and Josephine Zomayah, both sophomores, earned spots on the All-Tournament team.
"This year, we are all trying to lay the foundation for a new program here, and this weekend, these players did exactly that. They are proving to themselves and to everyone out there that we're serious about basketball and serious about turning the program around. I haven't been this proud of a team in a long time," commented Coach Sulpizio
COYOTES GET A HOME OPENER WIN!!

Jamaisa Allen played big. 20 points big in the first half. Addng another 13 points in the second half, she led Cuyamaca to a 75-71 victory against Cerro Coso. The team had an early lead and went into half time up by one. The visiting Cerro Coso went on a rally and gained at 9 point lead. The Coyotes answered back with a full court press and defensive intensity to go on a 10-0 scoring run. Down by 2 with two minutes left, the Coyotes scores the last 6 points to grab the win.
"It was nice to get an early victory, but we still have lots of work to do." Said Coach Sulpizio. Our defensive intensity needs to start at tip-off. We can't get used to being down by 8 or 9 points. The teams coming up won't let us climb back from a deficit."
Jamaisa Allen had 30 points. Ashley Baker added 12. Josephine Zomayah and Crisela Banks added 8 points.

NEWS-- Road opener a
challenge for the Coyotes.
Youth and inexperience filled up the weekend and the Coyotes lost their two opening games to East LA and El Camino. East LA played a man defense, putting pressure on the wings, while El Camino seemed to shoot well from all areas of the court. At times, the Cuyamaca players showed their frustration and let fatigue get to them. Tiffany Tooson fouled out of game one, and Jo Zomayah and Crisela Banks fouled out of game two.
Despite the double losses, Coach Sulpizio believes the team is on the right track. "One night Crisela (Banks) had 16 points, the next night Jamaisa (Allen) had 22. Both nights Ashley Baker dominated the boards. If we put that offense in the same game and eliminate some of the careless errors, we're right there with both of those teams," Sulpizio said. The Coyotes outscored El Camino in the second half: 30-25, and doubled their scoring output from the first half--they ended the half with 13 points.
Other important factors included the teams best defender, Tiffany Tooson playing only 8 minutes in game two due to a strained pectorais. Crisela Banks, due to foul trouble, saw less than 10 minutes of game time. "Those things hurt." Sulpizio commented. "But this team has to figure out ways to stay in the game and on the court. We're all learning. That is what this time of the year is for."
Jamaisa Allen continues to
dominate and lead a young
Coyote team...
WIth 22 points, Allen put on a show in the second half against El Camino. Living up to her 48% 3 point shooting record that lead the PCC in 2007, Allen proved she is ready to compete in her sophomore season.
She played all 40 minutes of the game, leading the team at the point guard position.
She followed that up with a 33 point game to lead the Coyotes to their first win against Cerro Coso. 20 of Allen's points came in the first half. Allen had to miss the first ten minutes of the second half due to an upset stomach, but ended the game with a strong presence.
