Scott Strange

Scott Strange enters his 3^rd year as Head Coach of the lady coyotes, following a 1 year stint as an Associate Head Coach. His technical training and intense passion for the sport have early roots developed on the beach in Hermosa during the 60’s and early 70’s.

A 4 sport athlete at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Scott was the 1^st 4 sport athlete in school history. His senior year he earned MVP honors as the 2^nd year starting quarterback of the mustang football team as well as his 3^rd MVP as the #1 player on the tennis squad. A playmaking guard on the basketball team and a 5^th place finish at league finals clearing 6’ in the high jump for the 1^st time completed his 1971-72 season to remember. Scott spent his summers playing American Legion Baseball, body surfing, and competing in 2-man beach volleyball.

Scott spent 4 years in Greeley at the University of Northern Colorado where he started as a free safety on the frosh/soph football team and was honored as First Team All State as a setter/hitter for the UNC Men’s Volleyball Club Team. One of 3 traveling amateurs playing for the Denver Comets, an IVA professional team, Scott caught the eye of San Diego State Men’s Volleyball Coach, Rudy Suwara, who convinced him to return home to Southern California to compete with the Aztecs in 1977-78 season for his final year of Division I eligibility.

Scott attended 3 consecutive USVBA National Championships with the San Diego Evening College Nite Owls coached by former Long Beach State Coach, Ray Ratelle. Teaming up with recently retired San Diego State Head Coach Mark Warner, Beach and UCLA/SDSU veteran, Kurt Donaldson, among others, they captured 4^th place in Dayton, Ohio, a 5^th place finish the following year in Portland, Oregon, and finally a 9^th place finish in Hilo, Hawaii in 1979-1981.

Scott has coached Collegiately, Club (boys and girls), and locally for boys and girls at El Cajon Valley, Helix, and Valhalla High School for over 30 seasons. He takes particular pride in recognizing, training, and graduating young setters and is considered to be one of the top setter coaches in San Diego County. He is the Founder/Director of East Valley Volleyball that began in 1994. He continues to grow the game as is recognized throughout San Diego for providing a quality, affordable and competitive program for the youth of East County and surrounding communities.

Scott also is the Men’s Tennis Coach at Grossmont College and will be entering his 12^th year with the Griffin men in 2010. His program is nationally known as his teams have been ranked in the top 6 in the state 8 of the last 10 years. His teams have won 7 Pacific Coast Confrence Championships and he has been rewarded with numerous Coach of the Year Awards. He received the California State Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year Plaque in 2004 after his 2003 team finished as a state runner up. And in December of 2004, Scott was recognized as the Wilson/ITA Men’s Community College National Coach of the Year at the Doral Club in Florida. He has trained and mentored 14 JC All-Americans, 2 Ojai Championship Doubles Finalists, and 3 Ojai Doubles Champions including 2005, 2006, and 2008. His Griffins have compiled a 10 year Pacific Coast Conference record of 115-9. Prior to coming to Grossmont, Scott coached 4 years at Helix High School in La Mesa.

Scott has been an El Cajon resident for the past 28 years, married Dorothy in January of 1980, and has two grown children-Shaun, 26, and Sarah, 23.
