Welcome to Spanish 120: Blended (Section 4621)

Spanish 120 is a 5 unit, semester long course, designed for students with little or no knowledge of the Spanish language. Section 4621 is a special course, offered exclusively to those students wishing to take advantage of technology. Three hours of class per week will be delivered in the classroom and two hours will be delivered online.

The advantage of this blended format is that it allows students the flexibility to learn new concepts outside of class before coming to class to practice those structures with classmates and the instructor. Students must understand, however, that a course of this nature requires responsibility and dedication. If you are not a self-motivated learner or if you do not have easy access to a computer outside of class, you are strongly urged to enroll in a different section of Spanish 120.

Special requirements

It is assumed that students not only have access to a computer and internet connection, but that they are competent at basic computer skills (word processing, PowerPoint, email, Web browsing, etc.).

Please see How Hybrid Classes Work for details about the structure of the course and what you should expect. Students need to have access to a reliable computer with a good Internet connection (high bandwidth) and word processing software.

Required Text

The textbook for this course is NOT available at the Student Bookstore, so DO NOT purchase the package until you are sure you will be taking this section of Spanish 120.

The textbook package you will need to buy is available only through VHL Direct and includes a hard-backed textbook called Vistas, 3rd Edition (to be used in class), as well as En línea, a fully online text (complete with workbook, lab manual and audio visual materials).

The package ISBN # is: 1-60007-373-5 and the cost of the package is $140. The good news is that the textbook, Vistas, will be used in Spanish 120, 121 and 220, so you will not need to purchase another Spanish textbook next semester (or the semester after that).*

*NOTE: Students deciding to switch to a traditional section of   Spanish 120 (or Spanish 121 or Spanish 220) will be required to buy a code for the Web SAM (online Student Activities Manual) at an additional cost.

So what do I need to be an online student?

Here's what you need to be able to succeed in an online course:

  • Access to a computer with Internet access (e-mail, Internet Explorer).
  • Textbooks (see Required Text)
  • Ability and willingness to work independently.
  • Solid experience with Internet and email
  • TIME! Successful students schedule at least double the amount of total class hours outside of class (5 x 2 = 10 hours per week). This class will NOT be easier than the traditional Spanish 120 sections, and may very well require even more time.

Student To Do List

  • Purchase Vistas, 3rd Edition & En Línea Student Book Key from VHL Direct as directed above
  • Enroll in Quia. (Click here for step-by-step enrollment instructions)
  • Click here for login instructions for Vistas Supersite
  • Read the syllabus and follow the course calendar.
  • Take this online quiz to help you assess your readiness. (I set this up to open in a new browser window. To get back to this page, close the window when you are finished.)
  • Visit these web pages for Tips for Online Success, Frequently Asked Questions (by Cuyamaca College students) and Online Resources.
  • Become familiar with BlackBoard and check email frequently.
  • Come to class! Your active participation is required for you to be successful in this course, and a full 20% of your grade is based on your being in class and interacting with classmates and instructor.
  • Come to class prepared. Online assignments (including quizzes) will typically be due the night before we meet in class, and late work will not be allowed. It is recommended that students complete outside work in a timely fashion and not wait until last minute. Excuses such as: "my computer crashed yesterday" or "the server went down last night" are unacceptable so plan ahead!
