INTRODUCTION TO SLO/ SSO 5

Studies have shown that students who do not use the physical library, may not use library resources, and may possess poor research skills. Anecdotal evidence suggests that students that know about the physical library resources, such as quiet study space, group study rooms, and librarian research help, are often academically successful. (Ly, Pearl).

The mission of the CC Library Technical Service Division is twofold: 1) to provide general information service to all students, faculty and staff and 2) implement policies and procedures so that students, faculty and staff have equitable access to library collections. The staff is largely responsible for the "health and well-being" of the library's collections. Without this department, the operations of the library would grind to a complete halt

How CC Library Public & Technical Services Division contributes to student development of IC skills

Library is committed to the continuous improvement of its circulation and technical services. Therefore, core to its planning process are  surveys of its outcomes for services, particularly as to how they relate to student use and satisfaction.

1.      Facilitates searches for needed information by maintaining the efficient organization of and timely access to  course reserves.
2.      Facilitates use of audio/video resources by maintaining the efficient organization of and timely access to media resources.
3.      Provides timely access to resources of other libraries via inter-library loan to supplement Library collections.

Student Learning Outcome 5:

The CC library staff develops and reinforces circulation policies for the print collection and and reserve collection so that students have equitable access to these collections.  Students who interact with the Circulation library staff will be able to develop the IC skills of identifying circulation policies and reserve collection policies in order to use available library materials properly. The student will identify Cuyamaca Library circulation or reserve collection policies.
Expected outcome :
The student will identify 4 out of 5 circulation policies or 4 out of 5 reserve collection policies.

RESERVE POLICIES CIRCULATION POLICIES

Students will identify reserve collection policies that ensure proper usage of available materials. The Reserve Collection is comprised of high demand materials selected by instructors to support current courses and other heavily used items. The Reserve Collection policies provide students with equitable access to reserve materials.
By implementing this assessment plan, the expected outcomes are that s
tudents who interact with circulation staff will be able to identify 4 out of 5 reserve collection policies listed:

  • locate the circulation desk to check out a reserve item.
  • demonstrate use of the borrowing policy for reserve items
  • identify the loan periods for reserve items labeled "library use only".
  • identify the fine amount for overdue reserve items policy.
  • identify the consequences of the unpaid fines policy
  • Go to SLO Matrix for surveys, data results and more

Students will identify circulation policies that ensure proper usage of available materials. Library circulation policies are created to ensure all students equitable access to library materials. Since students are borrowing books and materials that belong to the College, students are responsible to return items on time and in the condition they were received, as others may be waiting to use the materials.

By implementing this assessment plan, the expected outcomes are that students who interact with circulation staff will be able to identify 4 out of 5 circulation policies listed:
  • locate the circulation desk to check out a book.
  • demonstrate use of the borrowing policy for circulating items.
  • identify the the loan period policy for circulating books.
  • identify the fine amount for overdue circulating books policy.
  • identify the consequences of unpaid fines policy.
  • Go to SLO Matrix for surveys, data results and more

Note: user survey versus satisfaction survey
