Introduction
PURPOSE:
This website reports Cuyamaca College Library's attempt to develop Program
Level SLO's for
the Library.
Cuyamaca Library's attempts at developing Library Program Level SLOs
Accreditation
standards require the construction of program level SLOs for each
department.
Developing Program SLOs for libraries is new territory for us.
It is generally agreed that library use is indeed beneficial for students to
achieve their educational outcomes. But to prove that it really does so, or
to what degree it contributes to students’ attainment of educational
outcomes is difficult.
For example, it
is easier to assess students in a 15 week course with exams and quizzes. It
is difficult to assess student leaning in a 50 minute library
instruction orientation or a five minute reference desk interview.
The Cuyamaca Library Program Level SLOs differ from the Program Level SLOs
for subject disciplines (e.g.English, Math).
The Cuyamaca
Library Program Level SLOs Library are assessable statements of
what students will be able to know and do as a result of completing a
library orientation and/or a reference desk interview.
These SLO's are explicit
statements describing abilities (not attitudes) that a student will be able
to demonstrate as a result of his or her engagement in a particular library
orientation and/or reference desk interview.
Program Level SLOs for subject disciplines, on the otherhand, are assessable
statements of what students will be able to know and do as a result of
completing coursework within a discipline/department.
These SLO's are explicit
statements describing abilities (not attitudes) that a student will be able
to demonstrate as a result of his or her engagement in a particular course
session.
MISSION:
Cuyamaca College
Library's mission is to increase student library “Information
Competency” (IC). The accepted definition is
"Information
competency is a set of skills that require the student to recognize
when information is needed and to be able to locate, evaluate, and use
the needed information."
The Cuyamaca College Library has created
SLOs for three areas of library services:
1)
library instruction program: reference and library orientations, and course
LIR
2) library collection
services
3) library circulation and technical
services.
The Library has
identified
Library Program
SLOs and created an
assessment plan matrix.
Library Course Level
Student Learning Outcomes
Cuyamaca Library offers a stand
alone one-unit course called LIR 110 which will be assessed in Fall 2011.
This will be assessed separately from the Program Level Library SLOs
