Cuyamaca Educational Objectives

In today's business environment, being able to access and effectively use information is more important than ever. This website reports Cuyamaca College Library's attempt to embed the teaching and assessing of specific student learning outcomes (SLO) called information competency skills within the framework of the college curriculum.

Educational objectives of Cuyamaca Library

Cuyamaca College Library places students at the center of its efforts and value structure, and emphasizes academic excellence through teaching library information competency skills.

From a student perspective, there are two key intended student learning outcomes. By the end of their college experience using Cuyamaca College Library, students will be able to:

• Outcome #1: Students will be able to locate information.
  Use information management skills to utilize a variety of library resources effectively, including books, published articles, multi-media, and web sites
   
• Outcome #2: Students will be able to evaluate information.
  Use critical thinking skills and problem solving to evaluate resources in order to determine reliability, validity, authority, and point of view
   
• Outcome #3: Students will report an increased level of confidence to use information effectively and in a timely manner for the remainder of their studies and beyond.

Educational Objectives of Cuyamaca College

The Educational Objectives of Cuyamaca College reinforce the Library SLO's. The college catalog statement identifies information competency and states:
"students should be able to locate, evaluate and utilize information resources.  Preparing students for lifelong learning is the ultimate goal."

Educational Objectives of the Cuyamaca College General Education

As stated in the Cuyamaca College Core values, information competency is integrated into the General Education curriculum:

“Courses shall motivate students to develop information competency skills to improve the quality of education and everyday life through the selective use of information technology and information resources.  Students will be able to identify information resources, apply appropriate tools to acquire information, formulate a search strategy, evaluate information and recognize alternative information sources.  This can be achieved through various activities including but not limited to : using computers, periodical/journal research, internet research, web-home projects and library research orientations a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and to have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.”
